Pistacia lentiscus grows throughout the Mediterranean region, from Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula in the west through southern France ​​and Turkey in the east.
Mastic gum, derived from Pistacia lentiscus, is a relatively expensive variety of spice that has been used primarily as chewing gum for at least 2,400 years in the Greek islands.
